Can you give me some advice related to car stereo installation and harnesses?

I want to install an aftermarket stereo in my 2000 Impala. I went to Circuit City and picked out a stereo and the mounting kit. The sales person walked me through the process. Then when I went to check out the radio guy said, “you know you have to buy a $99 harness too, don’t you.” I was upset because the sales guy had said that the $20 mounting kit included everything I needed. Do I have to buy a harness? Does that mean no matter how economical a radio I select I have to add $119 to that for the installation materials needed? I just hate to spend that much as I have an okay radio, I just wanted a cd player. Can you all let me know what my options are? Thanks so much.
